Chapter Ten

As the trio passed through the threshold into Brantford’s building, they became deathly silent. The echoes of their laughter clung to Victoria’s mind and she found herself glancing back at Elizabeth without meaning to. It was surprising to her how well Malcolm’s formerly estranged wife had been able to lighten her mood so easily. She was thankful for that and was glad that even though she was angry with Malcolm, that perhaps Elizabeth could be a friend.

Through her earpiece, Victoria could hear Cameron’s men presenting the warrant to Brantford’s security. They were angry and baffled, but were forced to comply with the search.

“Damn him,” she heard Branford hiss into her ear. “Hide her where those idiots won’t find her. Why the fuck did my agents not warn me of this?”

She turned to look at Malcolm and Elizabeth whom were behind her. “He’s moving Claire somewhere in the building. The FBI is catching him off guard.”

Malcolm nodded. “Do you know where?”

She shook her head. “No, and I don’t know where he is either.”

“It’s a start,” he replied. “While we’re down here, we should cut the power to the elevators.”

Victoria furrowed her brows. “That’s a good idea,” she said in approval. “Let me see the blueprints.”

Malcolm produced them from his jacket and handed them to her. Her eyes scanned over them rapidly until she found what she was looking for. “Alright, I’ll go do this. When I hear that Claire is being moved and they are in the elevator, I’ll cut the power.”

“No,” Elizabeth said quickly. “Let me. You two are more capable of dealing with the danger in here and this is something I can do.”

Victoria frowned. Alone, she thought to herself. It wasn’t an idea that she was comfortable with and she wanted to protest. However, she knew that Elizabeth was right. Dragging her into a fight was more likely to get her killed. “Alright,” she conceded. “Take this and wait until you hear which floor they are on.” Reaching up to her ear, she removed her ear piece and handed the small device to Elizabeth.

“I’ll call you once it’s done,” Elizabeth said with determination. “Both of you, be careful.”

“Always,” Malcolm replied through a smile. “Don’t be reckless if someone comes down here to fix the problem.”

“I should be okay,” she said calmly. “Show me where the controls are down here.”

Victoria nodded, motioning for Elizabeth to come next to her. “Can you remember this?” she asked in concern.

“Of course,” Elizabeth replied sweetly. “I’ll let you know when I’m in position. Just put your phones on vibrate.”

A slight smile formed on Victoria’s lips as she nodded. “We’ve done this before,” she said reassuringly. “We’ll be okay.”

“Famous last words,” Elizabeth countered. “Please bring my baby back safely. I’m sorry I’m not more help.”

Victoria shook her head. “Right now, you’re being the biggest help I can think of. Malcolm is right though, someone is probably going to come down to fix what you’ve broken, so be on your guard.”

“Stay safe, Lizzy,” Malcolm said gently.
